Can I use Wix with my own domain?

Introduction

It sure is! You can connect a domain name purchased from another provider with your Wix site. This is called connecting a third-party domain. Your new domain will remain connected to your Wix site as long as you renew your domain and keep the same settings that were saved when the connection was made. Changing these settings can break the connection between Wix and your domain. If this happens, you'll need to reconnect the domain in Domain provider.

Yes. You can use a domain name purchased elsewhere with your Wix site. This is done by changing your domain's nameservers to Wix's.

When you purchase a domain name from Wix, you'll use that same domain to create your site. However, if you've registered a different domain name elsewhere and want to use that instead, Wix allows users to update their sites using their own domains. This is done by changing your domain's nameservers to Wix's domain settings.

When you connect your domain to Wix, it means that the domain management stays with your current domain host, but the URL of your domain points to your Wix site. This means that when people type in your web address (e.g. www.mywebsite.com) they will be be brought to your Wix site.

There are two ways in which you can connect your domain to Wix - via name servers or via pointing. The method you use to connect your domain determines where the DNS records of your domain are hosted. DNS (Domain Name System) records tell your domain where to go to load your website.

We strongly recommend that if you want to connect a domain you already own to your Wix account, you change its name servers so that it points directly at our servers instead of going through yours first!

Change the Nameservers to the following:

To get started, you'll need to change the nameservers of your domain.

To do this, log into your registrar and click on the DNS tab or name servers page. You will see an option to add or remove name server hostnames, so choose "Change" or "Add Hostname". Then enter the following information:

* Please only add the IP addresses if required by your domain.

Two ways to connect a domain to Wix

One is using name servers and the other is pointing. Both of these methods will ensure that visitors are directed to your Wix site when going to your domain. The way you choose is dependent on which type of service you have with your domain provider.

To connect a domain to Wix:

  • Using the name servers that were provided by your domain provider when you purchased your premium plan. This means that if you bought a new domain from GoDaddy and want to use their DNS service, this is the way to do it. This method is simple because all you have to do is add the new name servers (which will be provided by Wix) into GoDaddy's account settings.

  • Pointing your existing domains at Wix. If you don't have access to any name servers or premium plans for one reason or another, then pointing should be an option for you as well. You'll need access to control panel in order to point your existing domains at Wix; this can usually be done through cPanel or Plesk (depending on which hosting provider your site's currently using).

Use Name Servers if you have a Premium Plan or registered a new domain.

If you have a Premium Plan or registered a new domain, you can use Name Servers.

  • For example, if your site is www.example.com, then add in the following: ns1.wix.com, ns2.wix.com and ns3.wix.com in your Domain Settings page (or whatever name servers are listed on your account).

Use Pointing if you don't have a Premium Plan and registered a new domain elsewhere.

If you don't have a Premium Plan and registered your domain elsewhere, Pointing is a free service that lets you point your domain to Wix. To get started with Pointing, you'll need to complete these steps:

  • First, go to Domains in your Wix account.

  • Then click Add an Existing Domain.

  • Next, select the site you want to connect your domain to and click Next.

  • Enter the domain name and click Let's Go.

  • You'll see some information about the process on the next page: just click Start!

  • Now you'll be taken to our Domain Pointing page where you can update your DNS records in your domain host account.

This step may take a while, so we recommend doing it later when you have time. Once everything propagates, you can start using your new Wix site with its own custom domain!
